Graeme Souness Turned Down Barcelona for Sampdoria in 1984
Graeme Souness, a prominent figure in Liverpool's history, has disclosed that he turned down an opportunity to sign with Barcelona in 1984 when he departed from the European champions. Instead, he chose to join Sampdoria for £650,000 shortly after lifting Liverpool's fourth European Cup against Roma.
At that time, Souness was regarded as one of the top midfielders globally, having finished sixth in the Ballon d'Or rankings. His decision to move to Italy rather than to a major club like Barcelona surprised many. He explained that personal circumstances influenced his choice, as his wife was set to inherit money and needed to spend three years abroad. Although he received a two-year contract offer from Barcelona, he preferred a three-year deal, which led him to Sampdoria, where he contributed to building a young team.
During his two seasons with Sampdoria, Souness won an Italian Cup before taking on the role of player-manager at Rangers in 1986. He later reflected on his management style, noting that it may not align with the current expectations of players. Souness also commented on the psychological advantage Rangers have over Celtic following recent victories in the Old Firm matches.
