Granit Xhaka Receives Suspended Fine for Forged Covid-19 Certificate
Granit Xhaka, the captain of Sunderland and the Swiss national team, has been fined 150,000 Swiss francs (£136,000) for acquiring a forged Covid-19 vaccination certificate. The fine is suspended for two years, contingent on him not committing further offenses.
The 34-year-old midfielder reportedly obtained the certificate in 2022, a time when it was necessary for certain travel in Switzerland. Xhaka has accepted the court's decision and has already covered the associated court costs.
Previously, Xhaka expressed his concerns about the vaccine on social media, citing mistrust and uncertainty. He has since withdrawn from international duty following his statement. The Swiss public health office clarified that while a general legal requirement for the certificate did not exist, it was necessary for access to various activities and travel. Xhaka is expected to return to play for Sunderland in their upcoming match against Brighton.
