Guardians Add Milan Tolentino to Roster, Decline Options on Two Pitchers
The Guardians have announced the selection of infielder Milan Tolentino's contract as the offseason begins. In addition, the team has declined the club option for right-hander Trevor Stephan and ended a mutual option with pitcher Shawn Armstrong.
Milan Tolentino, who will turn 25 next month, was drafted in the fourth round in 2020. His addition to the roster comes as he was nearing minor league free agency, allowing the Guardians to retain him. Over the past two years at Triple-A, he has recorded 42 home runs and a 12.5% walk rate, although he has also struck out at a rate of 32.9%, resulting in a .221/.321/.445 batting line.
Defensively, Tolentino has primarily played shortstop but has also seen time at second and third base. The Guardians have other players in those positions, which may limit his immediate playing time. Meanwhile, Trevor Stephan's option was declined due to his struggles following Tommy John surgery, and he will now enter free agency. Shawn Armstrong, who faced injuries during the season, also had his mutual option declined and is expected to seek a new contract.
