Guardians Call Up Austin Peterson, Designate Carlos Hernández for Assignment

The Guardians announced on Friday the promotion of right-handed pitcher Austin Peterson from Triple-A Columbus, marking his debut in Major League Baseball. In a corresponding move, the team designated reliever Carlos Hernández for assignment.

This season, Peterson has made 19 starts in Triple-A, posting a 4.53 ERA. He has shown improvement recently, allowing no more than three earned runs in his last seven outings, achieving a 3.34 ERA during that stretch. Hernández, who was recently called up, pitched three innings for the Guardians, allowing two runs before being removed from the roster.

Peterson, who will turn 27 soon, was previously protected from the Rule 5 Draft last November after a successful 2022 season. Despite his solid performance, he is not currently ranked among the top prospects in the Guardians' system. Cleveland is also managing injuries, with setup man Colin Holderman placed on the 15-day injured list.
