Guardians Designate Gabriel Arias for Assignment
The Guardians have officially designated infielder Gabriel Arias for assignment, as announced on August 5, 2026. This move allows the team to promote top prospect Angel Genao to the major leagues.
Arias, who is 26 years old, was once a highly regarded prospect but has struggled to make a significant impact since his debut in 2022. Over 1168 plate appearances, he has recorded a batting line of .219/.275/.359, which is 23% below average according to wRC+ metrics. Despite being versatile defensively, Arias has not shown the offensive production expected from him.
With the trade deadline passed, the Guardians are placing Arias on waivers. If he goes unclaimed, he has enough service time to opt for free agency instead of accepting a minor league assignment. Should another team claim him, they would gain three additional years of control, although his ongoing struggles may lead to him being a non-tender candidate by November.
