Hannover Chess Club Celebrates 50th Anniversary with Major Tournament
The Hannover Chess Club celebrated its 50th anniversary in 1926 by organizing a significant chess tournament, which included the second congress of the newly established Lower Saxony Chess Federation. The event commenced with a festive banquet on August 8, attended by local dignitaries and tournament participants, including Walter Robinow, President of the German Chess Federation.
World-class players Aron Nimzowitsch and Akiba Rubinstein were invited to compete, with Nimzowitsch being a potential challenger to world champion Capablanca at the time. The tournament began on August 9, where Nimzowitsch and Rubinstein quickly emerged as the frontrunners. Their match ended in a draw, but Nimzowitsch ultimately secured victory with 6½ points from 7 rounds, while Rubinstein finished second.
The tournament also featured a brilliancy prize awarded to Nimzowitsch and Jacques Mieses for their outstanding games. Additionally, an international chess composition tournament was held, judged by Walter Freiherr von Holzhausen, who also performed well in the masters tournament.
