Healthy Seas Collaborates with Hyundai to Remove Ghost Nets from Oceans
Healthy Seas, a nonprofit organization, is dedicated to removing ghost nets from the ocean, which are abandoned fishing nets that continue to harm marine ecosystems. The organization has been working since 2013 to prevent and clean up marine litter, focusing particularly on these ghost nets, and recycling the recovered materials into new products.
Since forming a partnership with Hyundai in 2021, Healthy Seas has successfully removed over 320 tons of marine litter. Recently, they conducted a recovery mission in Catalina, California, where volunteer divers worked to clear ghost nets from a shipwreck. The retrieved nets are sent to Aquafil for recycling into ECONYL yarn, which is then used to create car floor mats for Hyundai vehicles.
Healthy Seas emphasizes the importance of addressing the issue of ghost nets, which can entangle marine life and disrupt ecosystems. The organization relies on trained volunteer divers for their missions and aims to raise awareness about the impacts of abandoned fishing gear. Hyundai continues to support these efforts as part of its commitment to sustainability.
