Hearts Suffer Heavy Defeat to Benfica in Europa League Qualifier
Hearts experienced a significant defeat against Benfica in the Europa League third qualifying round at Estadio da Luz, marking their fourth consecutive loss this season.
Benfica took an early lead with Rafa Silva scoring just two minutes into the match, followed by Tomas Araujo's header from a corner to double the advantage. Vangelis Pavlidis added a penalty before halftime, and Gianluca Prestianni scored shortly after the break. Tom Renaud managed to pull one back for Hearts, but Jhon Duran and Andreas Schjelderup sealed the match with late goals.
This defeat equaled Hearts' record European loss, previously set at 5-0 against Tottenham in the 2011/12 Europa League. The team has conceded 12 goals across three European matches under new manager Wouter Vrancken.
