
Heather Watson Advances in US Open Qualifying
Heather Watson secured a victory in the first round of US Open qualifying, overcoming Claire Liu after losing the first set. The British player won the match with scores of 4-6, 6-2, 6-4, maintaining her hopes of appearing in the main draw for the first time in five years.
Watson, aged 34, nearly lost her advantage in the final set but managed to hold on, setting up a subsequent match against Spain's Angela Fita Boluda. Other British players also advanced, including Toby Samuel, Jacob Fearnley, Billy Harris, and Harry Wendelken.
Samuel defeated Francesco Maestrelli, while Harris won against Gonzalo Bueno. Fearnley and Wendelken also progressed, although Liam Broady and Felix Gill were eliminated in their matches. Players must win three qualifying rounds to reach the singles main draw, which begins on Sunday.
