Hector Negrete Faces $1.8 Million Fine After Moving to Mexico

Hector Negrete, who relocated to Guadalajara, Mexico, nine months ago in search of a new beginning, was shocked to learn he owes the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) $1.8 million. This fine stems from a 2009 deportation order he failed to comply with during his over 15 years in the United States.

Negrete, who moved to the U.S. as a child fleeing violence, had been trying to gain legal status but faced numerous obstacles. After President Trump resumed office in 2025, he found his situation increasingly untenable, prompting his decision to leave the U.S. in September 2025. Upon receiving the fine notice, he initially thought it was a scam, but it was a legitimate demand for payment.

Negrete's case is part of a broader trend, with over 100,000 undocumented immigrants receiving fines from DHS since the start of Trump's second term. The agency has stated that those with final orders of removal may incur daily fines if they do not self-deport. Negrete's legal team is currently preparing to challenge the fine, arguing that he has provided sufficient evidence of his departure from the U.S.
