Heisman Trophy Rankings: Jeremiah Smith, Darian Mensah, and Malachi Toney Lead Ahead of Week 9
The Heisman Trophy race is intensifying as Week 9 approaches, with Ohio State's Jeremiah Smith and Miami's Darian Mensah and Malachi Toney emerging as the top contenders. Smith continues to lead the rankings, although his advantage has diminished following a less-than-stellar performance against Indiana and a bye week.
Smith holds a PFF grade of 93.4, ranking second among FBS wide receivers, and is tied for second nationally with 12 touchdown receptions. He leads the FBS with 4.78 yards per route run and has excelled on deep targets, achieving a perfect PFF receiving grade on those throws. However, with Miami's quarterback Julian Sayin sidelined, Mensah and Toney are gaining ground.
Darian Mensah has been exceptional this season, throwing 22 touchdown passes with only one interception, and has maintained a PFF grade of 92.5, the highest among FBS quarterbacks. Meanwhile, Malachi Toney has solidified his status as a top player, consistently earning high PFF grades and scoring in nearly every game. His recent performances have propelled his Heisman candidacy, making the competition increasingly fierce.
