Helen Haines in Critical Condition After Vehicle Attack in Australia
Australian lawmaker Helen Haines is currently in critical condition after being intentionally struck by a vehicle outside her office in Wangaratta on October 19. The incident involved a white Toyota Land Cruiser, and a 43-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the attack.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced that a terrorism taskforce would investigate the incident, although he noted that the motive remains unclear. Victoria Police confirmed that the driver was restrained by bystanders immediately after the incident, and a knife was discovered inside the vehicle.
Albanese expressed concerns about the rising hostility in political discourse, linking it to the anonymity of social media. Opposition Leader Angus Taylor condemned the attack, calling it a shocking day for Australia. Police stated there is no ongoing threat to the public and are treating the event as isolated.
