Henri Schoeman Reflects on Abuse Following 2016 Triathlon Win
Henri Schoeman, the South African triathlete who won the 2016 Triathlon World Series Grand Final in Cozumel, Mexico, has revealed that he has endured a decade of abuse since that race. During the event, Schoeman overtook a dehydrated Jonny Brownlee, who was assisted by his brother Alistair to finish second.
Schoeman, then 25, expressed that while the victory was significant for his career, it has been overshadowed by negative comments and attacks he has received online, particularly when the race video goes viral. He emphasized that the challenges of endurance racing often lead to unexpected outcomes, citing examples of other athletes who have faced similar struggles.
Despite the backlash, Schoeman stated he has no regrets about his performance and is now ready to embrace his victory after years of dealing with the impact of the abuse on himself and his family. He has continued to compete, winning a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in 2018 and recently finishing second in the African Championships.
