Highway 1 Reopens in Big Sur Amid Timber Fire Expansion
Highway 1 in Big Sur has reopened for travel after being closed since the Timber Fire began on August 9. While the western side of the fire is contained, the eastern side has seen significant growth over the weekend.
As of August 21, the fire had burned 6,147 acres, but due to dry conditions, it expanded to 12,616 acres by Monday morning. This increase occurred in remote canyons that are difficult for ground crews to access, prompting new evacuation orders. The Timber Fire is currently 25 percent contained.
Cal Fire reported that low humidity and severe drying conditions contributed to the fire's spread. More than 1,300 personnel, along with 14 helicopters, 81 fire engines, and 10 bulldozers, are engaged in firefighting efforts. Despite the ongoing challenges, the western flank along Highway 1 has been deemed safe for motorists, allowing full access through coastal Big Sur.
