Historical Connection Between Arsenal and Coventry City Revealed
As Coventry City gears up for its first Premier League match in 25 years against Arsenal, a historical connection between the two clubs has come to light. David Danskin, the founder of Arsenal, and Willie Stanley, who established Coventry City, are both buried in the Victorian London Road Cemetery in Coventry.
For nearly 80 years, the graves of these two football pioneers remained unmarked until efforts by local historians and fans led to the installation of headstones. Ian Woolley, a member of Friends of London Road Cemetery, discovered Danskin's unmarked grave in 2007 and initiated a campaign for a proper tribute. In April 2019, Arsenal funded a headstone, attended by Danskin's family from various countries.
Similarly, efforts were made to honor Willie Stanley, whose contributions to the formation of Coventry City in 1883 were also recognized with a gravestone. Historian Lionel Bird expressed hope that this shared history would foster a connection between the two clubs and their supporters.
