Hockenheim Engages in Talks with F1 for Potential Race Return
Hockenheim is currently in discussions with Formula 1 regarding the potential return of a race to the German track, although the project is still largely theoretical. The managing directors of Hockenheimring, Joern Teske and Jochen Nerpel, shared insights during an interview as the circuit launched Motorworld, a new center for motorsport and related services.
The Hockenheimring has a long history with Formula 1, having hosted the German Grand Prix since 1970 and being a regular fixture on the calendar until 2006. Financial challenges have hindered its ability to host races since a final event in 2019, despite interest in making it a flagship event again. Teske noted that Formula 1 is monitoring developments at Hockenheim closely.
To accommodate an F1 race, Hockenheim would require temporary grandstands to increase capacity and a larger pit building for the teams. However, the lack of public funding poses a significant obstacle, with Nerpel expressing concern over the limited support for F1 in Germany. Both directors emphasized that many issues need resolution before any concrete plans can be announced.
