Hockey India and Franchises Discuss Governance Changes Amid Internal Disputes
Hockey India and its franchises convened in New Delhi to discuss potential changes to the governance structure of the Hockey India League (HIL) amidst ongoing internal disputes. The meeting, attended by Hockey India president Dilip Tirkey and Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya, aimed to address concerns regarding the league's continuity.
Tirkey introduced Ranjit Gill as the acting director general during the discussions, while Cdr R.K. Srivastava, who has been asked to relinquish authority, was present in Chandigarh for the announcement of the men’s Asian Champions Trophy. The Minister emphasized government support for the HIL but indicated that changes to its governance structure were necessary.
A proposed five-member committee, including representatives from the franchises, Hockey India, and the ministry, is expected to develop a new framework within a month. Disagreements arose over equity stakes for franchise owners, with Hockey India advocating for a 51% share and exclusive voting rights, while franchises preferred a more equitable distribution. The Ministry reiterated its commitment to the sport's growth and development.
