Hockey India League Faces Uncertainty Amid Team Exits and Sponsorship Issues

The third edition of the Hockey India League (HIL) is encountering significant challenges as it faces potential team exits and dwindling interest from foreign players. This situation arises following disappointing performances by Indian hockey teams at the ongoing World Cup.

Sources indicate that multiple teams are considering leaving the league, and there are uncertainties surrounding the women's competition. The Ranchi Royals franchise has already been terminated due to non-payment issues, while only two of the four women's teams have verbally committed to continue. Discussions are ongoing for a new team based in Bangalore.

Hockey India officials have acknowledged that the men's competition may see a reduction in the number of teams, potentially down to five or six. The league has faced various issues since its re-launch, including payment disputes that have affected foreign player participation, prompting Hockey India to extend the registration deadline.
