Honda Changes Leadership in F1 Power Unit Program

Honda has announced a leadership change in its Formula 1 engine program, appointing Yoichiro Fukao as the new project leader, effective October 1. This decision comes as Aston Martin's engine partner aims to improve its performance in the competitive landscape of F1.

Fukao, who previously served as the assistant to the engine development leader, will take over from Tetsushi Kakuda, who has led the power unit development thus far. Honda Racing Corporation described this transition as a planned move to enhance the development of its power unit and ensure a smooth handover of technical expertise to the next generation of engineers.

The change follows a challenging start to the 2026 season for Honda, which has faced performance and reliability issues. The company is looking to strengthen its development framework ahead of new regulations expected in 2027. Discussions have also taken place regarding additional support for Honda, including potential adjustments to the ADUO upgrade system to assist manufacturers in need.
