Honda's Engine Upgrade Improves Driveability but Lacks Power
Honda Racing Corporation's president, Koji Watanabe, acknowledged that the latest upgrade to the Formula 1 power unit has brought its driveability closer to the level of its initial specification.
The manufacturer has faced challenges since its return to Formula 1, particularly with new technical regulations that emphasize electrical energy. Despite improvements in performance, the powertrain has struggled with issues like turbo lag and inconsistent downshifts, as noted by driver Fernando Alonso.
While the recent upgrades have helped Aston Martin's performance, allowing them to score points in recent races, Watanabe pointed out that the main issue remains a lack of power compared to competitors. He indicated that while the power target for the upgrade was met, changes made to the combustion process have led to a regression in driveability. Honda aims to improve this with further refinements, although the development process has been hindered by a late start and resource limitations.
