Hong Kong Unveils First Five-Year Plan to Boost Economy and Housing
On September 16, Hong Kong's Chief Executive John Lee presented the city's first five-year plan, aimed at improving residents' livelihoods and reinforcing its status as a global financial center. The plan includes the addition of 196,000 public housing units over the next five years and emphasizes upward mobility for young people.
The initiative follows two months of consultations and outlines the development of the Northern Metropolis, a 30,000-hectare area near the mainland border intended to create a new growth engine. This area is projected to provide homes for approximately 2.5 million people and generate around 650,000 jobs upon completion.
Lee's strategy also includes the launch of a central clearing and settlement system for gold by 2027 and the implementation of a central bank digital currency by the end of this year. The plan aims to diversify the economy, enhance technological capabilities, and integrate more closely with China's Greater Bay Area.
