Hornets Trade LaMelo Ball, Shift Focus to New Core

The Charlotte Hornets have taken a surprising direction after their best season in a decade by trading their franchise player, LaMelo Ball. This decision follows a season where the team achieved a winning record for only the second time in ten years, but ultimately fell short in the playoffs.

Executive vice president Jeff Peterson concluded that the existing roster would not lead to a strong contender in the Eastern Conference. Ball, who played 72 games this past season, was traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves. Additionally, the Hornets dealt Miles Bridges to the Phoenix Suns, acquiring draft capital and committing to Kon Knueppel as the new face of the franchise.

Knueppel, selected fourth overall in the 2025 draft, made an immediate impact, averaging 18.5 points and finishing second in the Rookie of the Year voting. The Hornets also secured Brandon Miller, their leading scorer last season, and signed guard Coby White to a three-year, $74 million contract. The team added veterans Grayson Allen and Dennis Schroder to bolster their backcourt, while also drafting Hannes Steinbach to compete for minutes at center.
