Hotter’N Hell Hundred: A Cycling Challenge in Texas

The Hotter’N Hell Hundred, one of the largest single-day bicycle rides in the U.S., kicked off in downtown Wichita Falls, Texas, with thousands of cyclists gathering for the sunrise start. The event began with a cannon blast and a flyover from Sheppard Air Force Base, marking the official start of the ride.

Originating in 1982 as a celebration of Wichita Falls’ centennial, the event has grown into a significant challenge for endurance athletes, offering various route options including a classic 100-mile ride. Participants face not only the distance but also the heat, with the ride featuring over 20 rest stops every five miles, providing refreshments and support from local volunteers.

The ride includes a critical checkpoint known as Hell’s Gate at Mile 60, where cyclists must arrive before a time cutoff to continue. The event culminates in Finish Line Village, where riders can enjoy food, craft beer, and live entertainment, celebrating their achievements with fellow cyclists.
