Houston's mayor expresses strong support for the city's bid to secure an NHL expansion team, emphasizing readiness to facilitate the process.

The mayor of Houston, John Whitmire, has expressed enthusiasm regarding the potential for the city to acquire an NHL expansion team. He indicated that his office is prepared to take necessary actions to secure the league's 33rd franchise.

Whitmire mentioned ongoing discussions with multiple interested parties and emphasized Houston's advantages over Austin as a location for the team. NHL commissioner Gary Bettman previously announced a six-month evaluation to determine the most suitable city for the new franchise, which will require a new arena and an expansion fee of $3.5 billion.

Deputy commissioner Bill Daly stated that the goal is for the new team to start playing in the 2029-30 season, with definitive agreements potentially in place by December. The NHL has recently expanded to Las Vegas and Seattle, and a new franchise would increase the league to 33 teams. Updates on the Texas expansion are anticipated during upcoming NHL board meetings.
