Hunter Dobbins Undergoes Elbow Surgery, 2027 Season in Doubt

Hunter Dobbins, a pitcher for the Cardinals, recently underwent reconstructive elbow surgery, raising concerns about his availability for the 2027 season. The procedure took place after Dobbins was placed on the injured list a few weeks prior, following an incident during a game against the Phillies.

Despite his earlier claims that his symptoms were not similar to those experienced during a previous UCL tear in 2021, the situation prompted him to seek a second opinion from renowned orthopedic surgeon Dr. Keith Meister. The expected recovery period is approximately 12 months, suggesting that this surgery may not be a full Tommy John procedure, leaving open the possibility of Dobbins returning late in 2027.

Dobbins joined the Cardinals from the Red Sox in a trade earlier this year and had shown promise during his rookie season in 2025. However, he faced challenges this season, including multiple trips to the injured list and limited playing time. The Cardinals, currently in a tight race for the NL Wild Card, will need to continue without Dobbins as they navigate the remainder of the season.
