Hunter Greene Expected to Miss 2027 Season After Elbow Surgery

Hunter Greene, a key player for the Cincinnati Reds, is anticipated to miss the entire 2027 season due to a revision of his Tommy John surgery.

The Reds announced that Greene's recovery is expected to take 12 to 18 months. The need for surgery was identified last week, but the specifics were confirmed shortly before the procedure took place on Wednesday.

This development is particularly challenging for the 27-year-old Greene, who had a 2.76 ERA over 45 starts from 2024 to 2025, but only made five starts in 2026 after undergoing surgery to remove bone chips from his elbow. Greene is under a six-year, $53 million contract that extends through 2028, with a $21 million option for 2029. His absence will impact the Reds, who have Chase Burns and Andrew Abbott as alternatives in their pitching rotation.
