Hurricane Genevieve Reveals Hidden Pier at The Wedge

The Wedge in Newport Beach, known for its perilous surf conditions, has become even more hazardous due to the impacts of Hurricane Genevieve. The hurricane's swell has exacerbated ongoing beach erosion, revealing dangerous metal fixtures that pose risks to surfers and beachgoers.

Jeremy Wiegman from Yucca Fins noted that the erosion has made the area increasingly treacherous, with exposed hazards becoming more visible. Surfer Koa Smith also remarked on the dramatic changes, highlighting the absence of sand and the emergence of previously buried objects, including a telephone wire linked to an old lifeguard tower.

In addition to safety concerns, the erosion has uncovered historical elements of The Wedge, including remnants of a pier that had been hidden for years. This pier was originally constructed to assist with the creation of a groin off the jetty, but it had remained buried until now, revealing rusty metal fixtures that surfers must navigate.
