Hurricane Isaias Becomes First Atlantic Hurricane of the Season
Hurricane Isaias has formed in the Gulf of Mexico, marking the first hurricane of the Atlantic season. The storm is currently classified as a Category 1 hurricane with sustained winds of 85 mph and is located 380 miles south of the mouth of the Mississippi River.
The National Hurricane Center indicates that Isaias could strengthen as it moves north, with winds potentially reaching 110 mph, nearing Category 3 status. The storm is expected to make landfall in Alabama or the Florida Panhandle late Friday night or early Saturday morning, bringing hurricane-force winds and storm surge of up to seven feet in some areas.
Coastal communities are preparing for significant rainfall, with forecasts predicting three to seven inches, and localized totals possibly reaching 15 inches. There is also a risk of tornadoes during the storm's approach. Surfers in Florida's west coast are anticipating favorable surf conditions as Isaias moves toward the east-northeast, although the swell is expected to diminish by Sunday.
