Hurricane Isaias Weakens to Post-Tropical Cyclone After Florida Landfall
Hurricane Isaias has transitioned into a post-tropical cyclone after making landfall on the Florida coast as a Category 2 hurricane on Saturday, according to the US National Hurricane Center.
The storm, which struck near Destin, Florida, is currently located about 55 miles south-southwest of Montgomery, Alabama, with maximum sustained winds recorded at 65 mph. Isaias is expected to continue losing strength while producing gusty winds inland before diminishing below gale force later in the day.
Authorities have issued warnings for potential storm surges, flooding, and tornado risks across southern Alabama, the Florida Panhandle, and parts of Georgia and the Carolinas. In Houston County, Alabama, downed trees and power lines have led to hazardous travel conditions, prompting road closures. Over 430,000 residents in Florida and nearly 297,000 in Alabama experienced power outages as the storm made landfall. Emergency declarations have been approved in both states to facilitate federal assistance.
