Hurricane Warnings Issued as Tropical Storm Lala Approaches Hawaii

Tropical Storm Lala is gaining strength as it approaches the Hawaiian Islands, particularly affecting residents of the Big Island. The storm follows the recent Kona Low flooding that caused significant damage earlier this year.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has warned of large and dangerous waves expected this weekend, particularly along the exposed windward and southern shores. Heavy surf may lead to localized coastal flooding and beach erosion.

As of August 14, Lala was located approximately 420 miles east-southeast of Hilo, with wind speeds around 60 mph. NOAA forecasts that Lala will strengthen into a hurricane as it nears the Big Island, bringing heavy rainfall that could result in life-threatening flooding and mudslides. Hawaii's Governor Josh Greene has declared a statewide emergency to facilitate access to resources and potentially deploy the National Guard. The Big Island is under a Hurricane Warning, while Oahu and Kauai are under Tropical Storm Watches, and Maui County has been upgraded to a Tropical Storm Warning.
