ICE Officer Charged in Shooting Released in Texas After Extradition Denied

An Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer, Christian Castro, who faces charges for shooting a man during an immigration operation in Minneapolis, was released from a Texas detention center on Thursday. His release followed a judge's decision not to order his extradition to Minnesota.

Castro was accused of shooting 24-year-old Julio Cesar Sosa-Celis through the front door of a home and subsequently lying about the incident. He was arrested in Cameron County on May 29 after a nationwide warrant was issued for him in Minnesota. However, due to Texas law, he had to be released after 90 days in custody.

Minnesota officials expressed concerns that Castro might flee to Mexico, citing his communications from jail about plans to marry a woman there. Despite these concerns, the Texas judge ruled that the case was not ready for adjudication, and the governor's office is currently reviewing the extradition request amid an ongoing investigation.
