IMSA Drivers Prepare for Indianapolis Amid Tougher Officiating

As the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship heads to Indianapolis, recent penalties have sparked discussions among drivers about racing standards and strategies.

The IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship is set to take place at Indianapolis Motor Speedway from September 18-20, featuring a 44-car grid for the final sprint race of the season. Recent officiating decisions, including seven penalties at the Virginia International Raceway, have brought driving standards into focus.

During the recent race, six of the penalties were drive-throughs, with a notable incident involving the #27 Heart of Racing Team, where driver Tom Gamble received a penalty for avoidable contact while contending for the GTD class lead. This has led to uncertainty among drivers regarding the interpretation of acceptable contact by race control.

Mikkel Jensen, a driver in the LMP2 category, expressed concerns about the inconsistency in officiating over the past years, noting the risks involved in overtaking maneuvers. In contrast, drivers in the GTP category, such as Nick Yelloly and Earl Bamber, indicated that they would maintain their racing approach, having had minimal issues with race officials so far this season.
