India Wrestling Faces Challenges Ahead of 2026 Asian Games
India's wrestling team is gearing up for the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, following a history of success in the sport since its debut at the 1954 Manila Games. The team has accumulated a total of 65 medals over the years, including 11 golds, showcasing a rich legacy that has inspired generations of wrestlers.
Despite this legacy, the team faced setbacks at the 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou, where they secured six medals but no gold. The upcoming Games present an opportunity to improve upon that performance. An 18-member squad was selected after trials, but recent doping incidents have affected the team composition, reducing the squad to 15 members.
Key wrestlers such as Olympic bronze medallist Aman Sehrawat and promising talents like Antim Panghal will represent India. The Wrestling Federation of India has also organized overseas training camps to enhance their preparation. The absence of female wrestlers in the doping controversy has provided some relief as the team aims to reclaim its former glory.
