India's Basant Kumar Meghwal Wins Historic High Jump Silver at U20 Championships
Basant Kumar Meghwal achieved a historic milestone by winning silver in the men's high jump at the World Athletics U20 Championships held in Eugene. This victory marks the first time an Indian has medaled in this event at the championships.
The 19-year-old from Anupgarh cleared a personal best height of 2.21m during the competition. His performance took place on August 8, 2026, on the fourth day of the event. Algeria's Younes Ayachi won gold, while Great Britain's Otis Poole took bronze, with all three athletes clearing the same height but ranked based on their attempts.
In addition to Meghwal's achievement, Shahnavaz Khan earned a bronze medal in the men's long jump with a best effort of 7.84m. His successful jump came on his third attempt, contributing to India's growing medal tally at the championships, which began with Ashish Yadav's silver in javelin throw the previous day.
