Indonesia's President Replaces Finance Minister Amid Economic Concerns

Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has removed finance minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa from his position and appointed Suahasil Nazara, his deputy, as the new finance minister. This change occurred on September 14, as the government seeks to regain investor confidence amid ongoing concerns regarding fiscal policies.

Suahasil, who has served as deputy finance minister since 2019, is the third individual to hold this position under President Prabowo. Following his inauguration, he emphasized the importance of maintaining a credible state budget and pledged to keep the fiscal deficit below the 3% of GDP limit set by law.

Purbaya's tenure was marked by significant economic challenges, including a depreciating currency and a rising fiscal deficit. His policies faced criticism, leading to a downgrade of Indonesia's credit rating outlook by Fitch and Moody's. The recent decision to replace him comes after a year in office, during which investor sentiment has been negatively impacted by policy uncertainties.
