Infantino Claims Support Ahead of FIFA Elections
Gianni Infantino, the president of FIFA, stated that he has the support of a significant majority in football as he prepares for re-election amid controversies regarding his World Cup investment proposals. His comments were made during an interview at the Under-15 World Cup in Azerbaijan.
Infantino is facing challenges to his leadership following a failed initiative to sell stakes in World Cup profits, which drew criticism from football leaders across Europe, North America, and Asia. He emphasized that he was elected by 211 member associations globally and acknowledged the existence of differing opinions within FIFA.
As he aims for a final term in office in March, Infantino's recent remarks follow an apology to FIFA's ruling council for errors in his investment strategy. Despite this, European delegates expressed disappointment over the lack of clarity in his explanations. Notably, the Asian Football Confederation recently endorsed his candidacy, reversing its earlier criticism.
