Introduction of Quarterback Index Aims to Enhance QB Evaluation
The Quarterback Index (QBI) has been introduced as a new metric designed to evaluate quarterback performance more accurately. This statistic aims to isolate the contributions of the quarterback from those of their teammates, providing a clearer picture of their effectiveness on a per-play basis.
In its inaugural rankings for 2025, San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy secured the third position, while Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams was ranked 23rd. The QBI methodology considers various factors, including play context, pressure situations, and the quality of the offensive line and receivers, to assess quarterback efficiency.
QBI is intended to be a forward-looking metric, capable of projecting future performance based on historical data. The rankings will be published weekly during the NFL season, with the expectation that they will become more accurate as more data is collected. The creator of QBI hopes it will become a standard in evaluating quarterback play.
