Investigation Launched After ASU Hockey Player Collapses During Workout
The Arizona State University Police Department has initiated an investigation into the events leading to the collapse of hockey player Matthew Mayitch during an outdoor workout on campus on August 20. Mayitch is currently hospitalized in critical condition.
Reports indicate that state police are examining whether any criminal actions took place, with this investigation being distinct from the university's own review. A university representative noted that it is standard procedure for the police department to investigate serious injuries occurring on campus.
According to the family attorney, Mayitch experienced exertional heat stroke, which resulted in a lack of oxygen to the brain. The attorney criticized the workout conditions, stating that it was inappropriate for athletes not acclimated to the heat, highlighting that the session lasted over an hour with minimal breaks.
