Investigation Launched into Fatal Train and Van Collision in Lancashire

The Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) has initiated an investigation into a collision that occurred on August 29 in Burscough, Lancashire, involving a Northern train and a delivery van. The incident resulted in the death of Simon Gettings, 55, who was driving the van from a supermarket.

The train, traveling from Southport to Manchester, struck the van at a manually operated crossing. While the British Transport Police is also conducting an investigation, the RAIB aims to uncover the circumstances leading to the crash and assess the actions of those involved. Two passengers on the train sustained minor injuries.

Gettings, a married father of two, was remembered by his family for his sense of humor and dedication to family life after retiring from teaching. Concerns have been raised about the safety of the crossing, with local residents noting that the gate is sometimes left open. The RAIB plans to release its findings and safety recommendations in the future.
