Investigation Underway After Fire at EMCO Weapons Facility in Bulgaria
Bulgaria is conducting an investigation into a fire that occurred at a weapons storage facility operated by EMCO near Tsareva Livada. The incident, which lit up the night sky, has raised suspicions of sabotage, especially in light of a previous explosion at another EMCO site in August.
No injuries were reported from the fire, which was confirmed by EMCO's production manager to involve mainly ammunition. Interior Minister Ivan Demerdzhiev stated that the fire was under control and that authorities would examine past incidents involving similar fires at EMCO and other defense firms.
EMCO has claimed that the fire was likely a result of sabotage, referencing over ten similar occurrences at Bulgarian defense companies since 2011. The company criticized the authorities for inadequate protection of defense facilities, noting that investigations into past incidents remain unresolved. The situation unfolds amid a politically sensitive climate in Bulgaria regarding arms supplies to Ukraine.
