IRFU Explores Opportunity to Join Premiership Women's Rugby
Lynne Cantwell, who leads women's strategy for the Irish Rugby Football Union (IRFU), has expressed optimism about the possibility of Irish teams participating in a future British and Irish League, viewing it as a significant opportunity.
The Premiership Women's Rugby (PWR) has opened a process for expressions of interest from organizations wishing to join its nine-team competition. The IRFU confirmed its interest in this expansion, and a decision regarding their bid, along with those from Scottish and Welsh unions, is anticipated within three to four months.
Cantwell noted the exciting prospect of merging PWR with the Celtic Challenge, which currently features teams from Ireland, Scotland, and Wales. She emphasized the importance of elite competition for national and emerging players, highlighting the benefits of cross-border play. The IRFU has submitted extensive data to support their proposal, and they await feedback from PWR, which operates under shareholder governance.
