Irish League Season to Commence on Schedule Following EGM Approval
The 2026-27 Irish League season is confirmed to begin as planned this weekend, following the overwhelming approval of three proposals at an Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) held by the Northern Ireland Football League (NIFL) on Tuesday night.
The EGM was convened to avert potential delays to the new Irish Premiership and Championship seasons. A quorum of 90% of the 47 member clubs was necessary for the meeting to proceed, and despite initial concerns, the required percentage was achieved, with a significant majority voting in favor of the proposals, surpassing the 75% threshold.
The approved proposals included the restructuring of the league, the adoption of league rules for the 2025/26 season, and the approval of competition rules for the 2026/27 season. The opening matches will feature Cliftonville hosting Crusaders in a derby, while Strabane Athletic will face Institute in the second tier. A legal challenge from Banbridge Town regarding the restructuring of the third tier had raised concerns about the season's start, but the EGM's outcome has ensured that the campaign will commence as scheduled.
