Irish Provinces Prepare for Champions Cup
The four Irish provinces are set to begin their European campaigns on Saturday as the Investec Champions Cup kicks off earlier than usual this season. This marks the first October start since 2018, with teams having played only three league matches before entering continental competition.
Leinster, who have been dominant in the Champions Cup, are seen as a major contender despite a weaker squad this year due to key player departures. They aim to extend their impressive record of 31 consecutive pool stage victories, although they have not won the title since 2018. Their pool matches include fixtures against Clermont, Sale, Pau, and Leicester Tigers.
Munster, another Irish province, is looking to improve after a disappointing exit last season. They face a challenging draw that includes Racing 92 and Bordeaux-Begles. Connacht, facing tough competition from previous champions, hopes to secure significant victories despite early season struggles. Lastly, Ulster, having dropped to the Challenge Cup, aims to return to the knockout stages while balancing their league ambitions.
