Iron Age Burial Site Discovered in Sutherland Quarry

Archaeologists have discovered an Iron Age burial site featuring the skeleton of a woman at a quarry in Sutherland, Scotland. This site was uncovered by Highland Archaeological Services during preparatory work for an expansion of the GF Job quarry near Dornoch.

The burial pit, which is stone-lined and measures about 10 feet long, 6.5 feet wide, and 3 feet deep, is believed to have remained undisturbed for around 2,000 years. It includes a small stone staircase and is located near the remnants of ancient Iron Age roundhouses, evidenced by post holes in the ground.

Although no artifacts were found within the pit, a significant amount of animal bone was present. The site is being documented through photographs and 3D scans, with information being added to the Highland Historic Environment Record. GF Job Ltd is financing further analysis of the remains, which may eventually be allocated to a museum by Treasure Trove Scotland.
