Islam Makhachev Aims for More Fights Before Retirement

Islam Makhachev, the UFC welterweight champion, has indicated that he wants to remain active in the ring as he recognizes that his fighting days are limited. He is set to defend his 170-pound title against Ian Garry at UFC 330 in Philadelphia on Saturday.

The 34-year-old fighter mentioned that he would prefer to compete every three to four months, acknowledging that age is a factor in his career decisions. Makhachev, who won the welterweight title nine months ago, has previously defended the lightweight title four times since 2022.

Despite his desire for more frequent fights, Makhachev noted that his ability to do so depends on avoiding injuries and cuts, as well as the pace of matchmaking in the UFC. Ian Garry, his upcoming opponent, holds a record of 17 wins and 1 loss.
