Islam Makhachev's Shift to Welterweight Solidified

Islam Makhachev is set to defend his welterweight title against Ian Machado Garry on August 15th, with indications that he will not return to the lightweight division. His coach, Javier Mendez, noted that Makhachev has gained 11 pounds of muscle and feels more comfortable competing at welterweight.

Makhachev, who joined the UFC in 2015 as a lightweight, has had a successful career in that division, defeating notable fighters such as Charles Oliveira and Alexander Volkanovski. He transitioned to welterweight in 2025, where he won his debut match against champion Jack Della Maddalena.

Looking ahead, Makhachev faces challenges in the welterweight division, including potential fights against Carlos Prates and Kamaru Usman. He has also shown interest in moving up to middleweight, aiming to become the UFC's first three-division champion.
