Italo Ferreira Addresses Criticism of His Aerial Surfing Techniques

Italo Ferreira has responded to criticism of his aerial surfing techniques during a podcast with Brazilian journalist Gui Dorini. He emphasized the importance of diversifying surfing skills rather than focusing solely on traditional methods.

Ferreira won the inaugural New Zealand Pro Championship Tour event earlier this year with three nearly identical air reverses, scoring a 9.33. His performance drew scrutiny from peers, including Ethan Ewing and Morgan Cibilic, who questioned the judges' scoring of aerial maneuvers. Ferreira defended his approach, arguing that he adapts his style to the conditions and that he has honed his skills in challenging environments.

He highlighted his background in the choppy waves of northeastern Brazil and his success in heavy surf locations like Pipeline and Teahupo’o. Ferreira encouraged other surfers to broaden their repertoire and adapt to different surfing conditions, asserting that winning heats requires flexibility in technique. He noted that his ability to perform aerials should not be criticized, as it is a skill he has developed over time.
