Jack Cale Prepares for World Deaf Rugby Sevens Championship with Family Support
Jack Cale, vice-captain of the Australian Deaf Rugby team, is gearing up for the World Deaf Rugby Sevens Championship in Tokyo, with strong support from his brother Charlie Cale, a player for the Wallabies. The two brothers, who grew up in Sydney, have always been there for each other, with Charlie presenting Jack with his official team tie ahead of the tournament.
Jack's journey into deaf rugby began unexpectedly when he was invited to a trial in late 2022. After being selected for the Australian Deaf Rugby men's squad, he played a key role in the team's runner-up finish at the 2023 world titles in Córdoba, Argentina. In Tokyo, the men's team will compete against England, Japan, Hong Kong China, and Italy in the pool stage.
Jack emphasizes the importance of non-verbal communication in deaf rugby, a skill he has adapted to while playing alongside teammates with varying levels of hearing loss. The Australian Deaf Rugby program aims to provide opportunities for deaf and hard-of-hearing athletes, a cause supported by both Jack and Charlie, who recognize its significance for inclusivity in sports.
