Jack Pyburn Waived by Buccaneers, Eyes Possible Return to LSU

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have waived rookie linebacker and edge rusher Jack Pyburn, a decision confirmed by a team source. This move raises questions about his future, particularly the possibility of returning to college football.

Pyburn, who was signed by the Buccaneers in May after playing for LSU, had a strong preseason, leading the league with four sacks in three games. However, he was released just before the final roster cuts. At 22 years old, he now faces the waiver wire process, where another team could claim him, or he could become a free agent if he clears waivers.

Notably, Pyburn is part of a lawsuit involving over 30 athletes that seeks to clarify the eligibility of players with professional experience. This legal action has resulted in a temporary restraining order allowing them to play this academic year. To regain eligibility, Pyburn would need to terminate his contract with the Buccaneers, which included a guaranteed $115,000. His attorneys have indicated that if he is released by September 1, he intends to return to LSU, where he previously started 11 games last season.
