Jack Whaley Wins US Amateur Championship, Secures Major Tournament Spots
Jack Whaley claimed victory at the US Amateur Championship, defeating American Jay Leng Jr. 4&3 at Merion, making him only the second Englishman to win the title since 1911.
The 22-year-old, who studies at Florida State University, entered the match as an underdog against Leng Jr., ranked 23rd in the world amateur rankings. After trailing by two holes after the first 18, Whaley made a strong comeback, winning four consecutive holes during the second round.
Whaley's win secures him a place in the Masters, US Open, and The Open at St Andrews in 2027. He is the first English amateur champion since Matt Fitzpatrick in 2013, with the last prior winner being Harold Hilton in 1911.
